The ‘F’Factor

When Burnley Football Club beat Championship winning Leeds United 4-1 at Elland Road in 1974, Burnley Chairman Bob Lord put Burnley’s victory down to ‘the F Factor’. Twenty years later, as World renowned architect Rod Sheard collected the ‘Building of the Year’ award for the magnificent McAlpine Stadium, he also highlighted ‘the F Factor’ as the driving force behind the Stadiums success. Paul Fletcher says "In the end we are all in charge of our own destiny. If your name is Smith, believe me the ‘S’ Factor will play the most important part in your success. No one else will have more influence on your future than yourself."

When Paul Fletcher joined Burnley Football Club in 1970 he became on of the country’s most expensive players. After gaining four England u23 International caps he was selected in Don Revie’s England squad, but a serious knee injury put paid to a full England call up. After sixteen years in professional football with Bolton Wanderers, Burnley and England u23, he has now become one of Europe’s leading Stadium experts. And joined a rare breed of ex professional players to successfully make the transition from ‘team sheet to balance sheet’. Following a six years spell as Chief Executive at Huddersfield Town, where he masterminded the award winning Alfred McAlpine Stadium voted ‘Building of the Year ‘ in 1995, and two years as Chief Executive at the £40 million Reebok Stadium in 1999 he was invited to become Director of the new £500 million Wembley National Stadium. After almost two years he controversially walked away from the project commenting that he ‘needed to spend more time with his wife and family in the Lancashire sunshine’.. He lives with his wife and family in Rawtenstall-on-Sea in the sun drenched Rossendale Valley in the heart of Lancashire. He is a Consultant to numerous Stadium projects in both this country, Australia and Europe and still an active member of the George Formby Appreciation Society.
