Sebastian Coe is one of the greatest athletes of all time having won 2 Olympic Gold medals (Moscow 1980 and Los Angeles 1984) and broken 12 world records during the course of his career. In unison with his "on track" achievements Seb served on various sporting committees including vice-chairman of the Sports Council, a member of the Health Education Council and Chair of The Sports Council’s Olympic Review. Seb retired from athletics in 1990 before moving into politics as MP for Falmouth and Cambourne from 1992 to 1997. When John Major was replaced as Conservative leader by William Hague, Seb became the new Chief of Staff before accepting a seat in the House of Lords in 2001. Since leaving politics Seb again became increasingly involved in sports administration, serving as President of the Amateur Athletic Association and Chairman of marketing company Fast Track Events. He has also served on various IOC committees and in August 2003 was elected on to the ruling council of the International Association of Athleties Federation. In May 2004 Seb was appointed Chairman of London 2012, the company bidding to bring the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to London. Seb is responsible for overseeing all aspects of London’s bid to develop an exciting and winning package. London’s bid has been short listed as one of five venues for the Games and Seb will help promote London’s bid internationally to the sports community in an attempt to steer London to becoming the first city to host the event 3 times. In addition to Seb’s sporting success, he has written five books on a variety of subjects and is an experienced broadcaster and public speaker and since 2000 has been a columnist for the Daily Telegraph. In 1998 he was awarded the Sports Writers’ Association Award for the most outstanding contribution to sport within the last 50 years. |
